Alright so I lied when I said that I never read Shane Claiborne’s Irresistible Revolution. Because it appears that I have read the first chapter probably a dozen times…
I remember why I liked it so much though. He writes with such honesty and conviction. He isn’t just another author out there with something to say. He clearly has lived through meaningful times in his life that are worth sharing with the greater public.
Some interesting points that he made:
- I can remember when Christianity was still safe, trendy, comfortable.
- For me, it was hard to read the Bible and walk away as if I had just seen a nice movie. Jesus never seemed to do anything normal.
- If we get sick, we go to the doctor, If we get hungry, we go to the store and buy it. We have eliminated the need for miracles.
- I found that I was just as likely to meet God in the sewers of the ghetto as in the halls of academia.
Reading these excerpts only screams at me what I am feeling inside. Like Claiborne, it is hard for me to read the Bible or a book that challenges me and walk away from it without feeling a “tug.” Every time I get these tugs, I realize that Christianity is not safe. Every “tug” I get calls me to dark places, dangerous places. It is in these places that I see God’s light beginning to shine.
