Back in the States!

img_1729Well after 4 weeks of training, flying, and traveling all throughout Uganda, I am finally home! I cannot even begin to describe what just happened in my life. All I know is that there is a hornet’s nest that has been stirred up in my heart for the oppressed and seeking justice for them is now burned into my soul.

There are definitely going to be more entries and I will try to get them going based on the specific days they occurred to keep them short and fun to read so be sure to keep checking back.

Before we left Uganda, the missionary hosts we were with (amazing people!) challenged us to come up with 3 adjectives to describe our trip. One word each, no phrases, and something other than “awesome” and “good.” (By the way, if you have been on a trip or are going to, try this exercise with the group. Very beneficial!)

In doing this, I came up with CHALLENGING, INSPIRING, and REWARDING.

CHALLENGING — I have never in my life been challenged spiritually or emotionally like this before. Reading scripture about the injustice in the world, sitting down with children who have lost all brothers and sisters from war, families who have nothing but the clothes on their back. Spiritual attacks like nothing I have ever encountered. God rocked my world in Uganda and even before I left training camp in New Jersey. Quite the experience.

INSPIRING — What I saw in Kampala and Gulu has changed my life forever. It has inspired me to not “change the world” like any naive person might think about doing but rather suffer alongside these people, bring Christ’s love to them.

1 Peter 2:21 — To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.

As a disciple of Jesus, we aren’t called to just sit by and worship Him every Sunday and pray to Him in the morning. We aren’t called to be nice to everyone we see and praise Him in the good times and bad. No – we are called to suffer like He did IN ADDITION to the above. To be with the poor and the oppressed, to be with the broken and needy, to shower the world with the love and hope of Jesus Christ.

REWARDING — Sitting with the children of St. Mary Kevin’s Orphanage and Boarding School and then hearing stories from displaced persons in Gulu was by far the most rewarding experience of my entire life. God opened my eyes spiritually and physically and in this my life has been changed and I believe my calling has been redefined to not just a “calling” but rather a biblical mandate. Seek justice for the oppressed, follow in His steps and suffer with others.

So be sure to check back and read about the experience. I will try and get stuff up ASAP!!

Thanks so much to all the prayers and support!! COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!!!

Day 40 of My Fast

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

So I was counting days the other day and future counting to 40 and realized that my birthday, November 30th, will be day 40 for me of my pornography fast!!

How cool!

I was talking with a friend and he was mentioning how powerful the concept of 40 days is in the bible. I’ve been wondering for years what it would be like to go this long without pornography and finally I’m going down that road and I am fully expecting God to show up on day 40 somehow and there after. Be praying for that for me please :) .

He has absolutely shown me the strength in His word to beat this addiction and shown me the purity in women that I have desperately wanted for so long. I’m excited to see where God takes me now that I am almost 40 days into what should become a lifetime fast. Thanks so much for all your prayers and support!

And for those that have read here that do struggle with it, believe me when I say that anything is possible with prayer and belief that God can purify and help you through an addiction like this!!

Amen!

WOW!!!

So this weekend!!

Absolutely unbelievable!! What an experience and time to get to hang out with pure professionals and all-around cool people. My role this weekend was one of three electrians for all the lights in the house. I was up on ladders and in the catwalk re-focusing lights, applying new gels, and hanging new lights as well. During the actual performance, I was one of the spot-light operators. Not glamorous but fun.

Not only did I get great hands-on experience working a real show with lights but I worked with professional designers who work the big leagues of lighting. Great guys and really chill. Brilliant designers and know how to think on their toes to create amazing shows.

The big news, however, is that not only did Tituss Burgess and James Naughton show up, but John Stetson, John Pizzarelli, Alec Baldwin, and Bette Midler were main acts as well!!! Let me tell you — all of them are classy people who are great people to work for and hang out with.

All in all, the weekend was incredible. The Hole in Wall Gang Camp is an incredible place that helps raise so much money for kids with cancer so that they can spend time with their family for a week of straight fun – no worries, no cares. Just family fun and time away from the troubles of having/dealing with cancer.

Things worked out in the end for me. God really stepped in and gave me an experience that I cannot wait to repeat next year! Amen!!

Sunday Reflections

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

A little late yes, but with school starting and work continuing, my time has been limited towards personal reflection time. I’m actually on my dinner break right now posting!

Sunday, for those that read the previous entry, you’ll know that I had a big day lined up for myself and the Atmosphere team as a whole. Needless to say, it was a HUGE day for myself and the other coordinator on the team. We were at church from 7:30am until 9:00pm…

Yeah… long day anyone?

But you know what?? (more…)

Amazing News!!

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

So check this out!

Tim Hunter is the guy in charge of lighting at UConn and helps with the admission of students into the Design/Tech program @ UConn — i.e. the man to talk to to get my degree rolling. I met with him last year and showed him my portfolio and he loved it! He was impressed that I was one of the lighting electricians for the plays and I wasn’t even in the program yet and he thought I’d be a good candidate to start this Fall.

Haven’t heard anything official but it seems that I am tentatively in the program so yay! Better news yet, here is a series of emails I received from him yesterday — Enjoy and Praise God!!!

Hi Evan,

I hope you are well and that you had a good summer.

I know you are interested in our program and so I would like to propose that we plan to get together during the second or third week of the semester to discuss how best to accomplish that move.

Prior to that I have a very cool opportunity that you might want to participate with. Ken Billington who is a very famous Broadway lighting designer does a show every September at the Hole in the Wall Camp. UConn provides three students to work with him on Friday September 5th and all day Saturday September 6th. Would you like to be one of those three?

Let me know and I will talk further with you about it.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Best, Tim

I replied “Of course I’m interested! Hook me up!” to which he responded:

Great Evan,

Let me know and I will try to get you into the program. There will be lots of movie stars in the show as well. It is a lot of fun and they feed you very well.

Best, Tim

Amazing how God works!!! I’m really excited about this and even Starbucks was okay with taking a weekend off for this! So hopefully it turns out to be fun and beneficial to me!! Keep it in your prayers as I get more details!

Reflecting on What Is…and Is Not…

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The last few weeks, without being too harsh, has been quite a trip. For those that read my post on my frustrations, you know what I was going through, and for good reason. To recap for those that missed out or don’t want to read about it, here goes.

  • UConn took away my financial aid because of bad grades from years ago that I am still trying to bring back up.
  • I have tuition bill that I cannot afford to pay.
  • I am still not in the Fine Arts program pursuing a Design/Tech for Theatre degree.
  • Tech responsibilities are piling on and things aren’t getting done.
  • Credit card bills are still high making saving money a hard thing to do.

As always, God changes our focus from the things to Him and allows to see how much is at stake in life and that these small things are minuscule in comparison. That is what I posted on above.

To recap some of the results from these issues:

  • Financial aid has been approved for me so I can afford school.
  • I am a part time student so the $1200 health insurance is not required so I don’t have to pay that part of the bill.
  • I just became eligible for a $34/month full medical with disability plan from Starbucks. Excellent!
  • Tech is slowly becoming a bit more organized. There will be big changes but for the good. And so far there may be two new members to the team soon.
  • Credit card bills are still high but slowly but surely coming down. My only concern is whether I can pay my tithe of one paycheck a month so as long as I can still do that, I am content with being in debt!
  • Apparently I was accepted into the Fine Arts program tentatively under condition of maintaining a B or greater average so with only two classes, that is doable.

I am only able to do so much but with the help of God and his ability to put all the pieces in the right place, I can do everything. This semester will be interesting to say the least with huge tech commitments at church, becoming Shift Supervisor at Starbucks, and, of course, school.

Pray for me!

Back to Home Sweet Home

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

After two weeks of military training, I’m finally back home. All in all, the training was not bad at all. The dreading and stress of what would ensue there was for nothing and it actually turned out to be quite refreshing for me to get away for a while.

I found that being away from my life’s distractions was exactly what I needed, even when I was waking up at 6am everyday, not exactly doing what I wanted to do. But doing just that cleared my head. Not only did I room with a fellow Christian who was strong enough in his faith to converse with me about it, but he even was encouraging me in my walk. I read one of his books from the Left Behind series and loved it. It was fascinating and regardless of any truth in it, it had me thinking about how I was living my life and bettering the world in preparation of Jesus’ return.

Overall, I had fun for the two weeks and aside from coming back home to find automatic payments for bills were not paid and a cable company trying to screw me, I am off to a good start. Not to mention I picked up a shift at Starbucks last night for extra cash and learned that I’ll probably be shift supervisor soon and my trainer when I arrived, Erin (the Christian), and I are becoming better friends and are starting to witness to some of the people that work there, simply expressing our concern and love for them. So if you are one who reads here and prays, that’d be a great praise report and prayer request!!

Good to be back!

Teach Me Your Way, O Lord

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

It is so peaceful right now. Birds are chirping, the faint sound of our central air system working can be heard. Coffee is brewing. Sitting on the deck in the morning is one of my favorite rituals, beaten by sitting on the deck at the beach haha. But right now is such a great place to be sitting – relaxing with coffee in hand, apple turnover in other.

Awesome :)

I cleaned out my inbox and came across a text that I sent to my email with a verse attached to it. I remember texting it during Jeff’s (teaching pastor) sermon last week. It really stuck out to me but after going back to it, it really struck me. The verse comes from Psalm 86:11-13. (more…)

Have You Stopped to…

… blow a dandelion yet this year?

There is something magical, yet childish about blowing the seeds off a dandelion flower. We’ve all done it. We’ve all been amazed and overjoyed because of it. It’s such a simple pleasure isn’t it?

I just got back into reading scripture today for the first time in probably a month. I go through dry spells a lot. Mainly because I am stubborn and think I can handle my life, yet still walk with God, when all I’m really doing is headbutting myself and tiring myself out.

So today, I finally stopped. (more…)

April 13 Worship Set @ St. Paul's

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Nights like last make it so worth it from the tech side of worship. Helping to create such an atmosphere of worship leaves me in awe of how great God really is. Beth and Stephen did an amazing job facilitating worship and the other members of the band were spot on! Cello, piano, electric guitar, bass — mmm sooo good!

Last night at St. Paul’s, God moved throughout the chapel and it was evident that people’s hearts and lives were being touched. In fact numerous times, the room became surprisingly bright with white light from outside as if He was expressing His joy in the service. Who knows if that’s the case but I believe it. God walked among us last night.

Be in awe.

In addition to the amazing experience, I was able, by the His grace, to record the band and have it actually sound good! Below are some of the links for the songs. Feel free to download as you like! Spread the word that the first unofficial release of the “Band at St. Paul’s” is ready to go. :)
